Over on facebook, a dear reader wrote “Im looking for a song, story, dance on losing a tooth. I have a class full of little ones that are all losing teeth and every week have a story about it. Thought it would be fun to dance about losing teeth.” Isn’t that a genius idea?! So I went searching and here is an idea I gave her. Continue reading I Lost A Tooth (Tooth Fairy) Dance
Hi Friends! Can you believe it’s February? This week marks the first week of the new semester. I always have mixed feelings. I know that after a few weeks things will settle in and it will be just fine, but it always seems to a bit of craziness on the first days. The part that confuses me is that I have returning students and new students all in the same class. Of course I just pick up and keep going through the curriculum but the dancers who just joined have a lot of catching up to do. Continue reading Tricks Of The Trade
Setting goals is a huge topic. When I think of my own goals, I think of how many I have accomplished since graduating college. I also think of how many more I want to accomplish. Eeek, makes my head hurt! If you ask my husband, he says I have a new goal every week! He’s right, it is just in my nature to be ambitious. It’s good to have goals, but sometimes I dwell and think about them too much; I’m still working on the balance. Continue reading 6 Goals To Set For Your Littles: AKA My Hidden Agenda
Have you heard about the book My Princess Boy? A mom wrote it about her little boy who wanted to wear dresses and jewelry instead of pants and baseball caps. She decided to not make it a big deal and allow him to express himself with whatever he wanted to wear. When I saw this, I thought “wow, how awesome is that?” A brave mom who isn’t allowing the world’s impressions of gender roles affect her son. She is letting him decide for himself. I love doing partner dances with my littles. It’s such a great lesson to teach them about teamwork and plus it’s always more fun when you have someone to dance with. Right? That’s where the magic string comes in… Continue reading My Magic String
Read It. Move It. Share It. is a collaboration with Kerry from Picture Books and Pirouettes. Once a month Kerry recommends a book for me to use in my creative movement classes. Then I write a post on what I did with the book and how I used it with my students in hopes of giving you some new ideas to use in your classes! Here is the December book. Enjoy!
One day as we were doing the Toy Shop dance one dancer said let’s be a bouncy ball! Well, I never thought of that and thought it might be fun to explore. I was in luck because Kerry had already picked the book Bounce to try with my class. Here is how I used the book in my 4 year olds. Warning: It’s really bouncy! Continue reading Bounce! Bump! Fall!
Last year I was inspired by this post to create a Hanukkah dance for my students. I made up a song and we had so much fun dancing to it. There is still time to try it this year! Here’s what we did: Continue reading Happy Hanukkah Dance
Looking for a new sound to add into your dance class? Have you tried a drum? When I was student teaching 5 years ago, my cooperating teacher said “buy a drum, it will be your best friend,” and she was so right. Here are some ideas for incorporating them into your class . . . Recently I have started doing near and far lessons with my students because I have found them literally sitting on top of each other when I walk in the room. Once I gave them the vocabulary to understand how close or far away they are from one another or me, it seemed to help. Here are some ideas I have tried with my 3′s and 4′s.
